We had a great time playing this one, and it was the perfect “train ride” on Christmas Day, and we love that we can play it again with a different result, we highly recommend it!
We had 20 guests. This experience had wordier introductions that past ones we got from you. Took the group 3 1/2 hours to complete. No one guessed the mischief-maker—second time in a row
It was a fun event, perfect for Christmas Dinner with friends & family.
Quite some stuff to prepare if you want to do it right.
Also suitable for a bit older kids (10+).
We had two smaller kids there as well - I wrote a very easy and suitable role for them myself, which was easy to integrate and left them the option to participate, without having to if they didn’t want to, or drop out whenever they got bored.
It could be nice to have a few such roles already included optionally the game, for families that also have smaller children.
We played with 7 adults ranging from 21-59 and had a fun time on Christmas Eve! I used the recordings of Santa that were provided to add some authenticity to the fun. It does take some prep so don’t wait until the last minute if you are hosting. Also, as the host, I opted out of knowing who the Poisoner was so I could play like everyone else. Grandma helped by sending each player the info they needed so I wouldn’t know. Enjoyed!!
We had a great time doing this on New Years night. It was especially cool that the number of participants was flexible, especially in this age of Covid. Another plus is that the killer can change from game to game, so you can use it more than once. We will buy again!
We did this for a unique Christmas work party (Creative Video Production) where there were 5 couples in attendance. Each was given their character name and wardrobe suggestions ahead of time. We played the game in an old railcar which was converted into a finished workspace. With some period lighting and train sound ambience to add to the evening, it was a very exciting and magical setting!
The game itself was lacking in the fact that any character can end up being the poisoner. This fact is touted as a "positive" rather than a "negative" with the rules claiming that the game can thus be played many times with different outcomes. This may be true, but we found that the plot itself was so watered down that in place of mystery, was just plain confusion. We all agreed we would have much preferred a single playable plot with more depth and intrigue with the characters. Luckily, we had an excellent group who each hammed it up with their character identity. After all, isn't that the key to these murder mystery games anyway?
Would not recommend, but this game ended up being the right vibe (Christmas) and setting (train) that we were looking for. So, in that sense it was a win!
***Oh, and look out for some British lingo such as "Mum," "straightaway," and "smart" (meaning clean/sharp).
A good way to make a regular dinner a bit more exciting. Very well organized with the playbook, audio files, character books etc. though, the individual rounds felt a bit repetitive. However, I would do it again. Thanks!
We enjoyed the ease of using the materials. I would suggest providing name tags for the characters-I made them using Avery, but I’ve used other murder mystery materials, and they provided name tags. It’s also helpful if some characters are interchangeable for male or female characters so they will work for any group. We did not appreciate the lesbian couple in the cast. I modified that to be a Mum and an Aunt.
Liked:
Fun scenario on train
Good characters - fun to play. May have been repetitive with larger group (we only had 5)
Not a murders (refreshing).
Disliked:
Too much gross potty humor.
Questions to ask were same as other player
Better suggestions for costumes
We played with a group of nine, and had a fun time! We did feel like the “guilty” statements could have had more clues in them, because we finished feeling like we had nothing to go on, no real clues to piece together to figure out who could have done it. We just guessed. It was still a fun game!
Es war alles sehr gut vorzubereiten, und es hat allen sehr viel Spaß gemacht. Ein paar Kleinigkeiten sind natürlich schief gelaufen, aber es war trotzdem sehr lustig.
Very good overall. It took a little preparation, but the night itself ran smoothly. The theme was engaging and it was easy to make a full evening around it.
It had too much potty humor in the audio files for my taste. I had different expectations of what it would be like. I thought there would be more actual evidence to be reviewed to figure it out, not just the scripts that repeated.
I realized after buying it that it would not work for our Christmas Eve gathering because it took too long to complete it. I used a few of its features and some murder mystery brain games to make it work for a 15-20 minute post dinner game with eight participants.
We had a fun time overall, and the characters made us laugh. This was my first murder mystery, so I don’t have much to compare it to, but I did feel that the evidence and dialogue didn’t quite give enough clues to identify the poisoner. I would have enjoyed more chances to really sleuth and solve it.
We really liked the character detail which was a lot of fun for every participant.
My participants were disappointed there was no actual murder. Animation for the video was quite simple and didn't fit with the theme of the game asthetically. An actual actor being filmed would have worked better.
Fun to play for all ages but it was hard to keep everyone interest.
I found giving each player a slip of paper with a letter only they saw, and asking them to remember it before placing back in a bowl was the best was if keeping the host in the game without knowing who was who.
This was perfect for our birthday evening. The Christmas murder mystery was easy to run and the host notes made it manageable. It gave everyone a reason to mingle.
