Lord of the Throne: The Hydrock Massacre

On the Isle of Abinark, the Kingdom of Hydrock has been established to bring peace to the land following The Great Battle. The Hydrock Pact decrees that all ten clans, that belong to the kingdom, shall inherit a designated realm wherein each can live in accordance with their own traditions and customs. The kingdom is governed from Hydrock Castle which sits atop St. Clyston’s Mount at the very heart of Hydrock; this is now the seat of King William Alexander John Vixsor ‘The Claret King’.

You have been invited by the king to attend Hydrock Castle, along with other selected representatives of Hydrock, to discuss matters relating to The Hydrock Pact and the governance of the young kingdom. However, upon your arrival at Hydrock Castle all is not well – Lefqwen of Abinark, the centauress famed for her speed, and usually the first to arrive at Hydrock Castle meetings, has failed to show. This is unexpected, and everyone knows that unexpected events that occur in Hydrock are usually prompted by murder!

This is the most I have laughed in awhile. It was a great game and a good excuse to get together with friends. Unfortunately, the layout of the question and answer phases of the game was a little confusing so several characters said wrong lines. But, I think with more practice we could do it again better.

The fantasy theme was great! We had tons of fun! We love that the game is replayable--we plan to play again next weekend with a different group of friends. We will see if the random murderer is still difficult to spot. We wished is was more like Lord of the Rings and less like Game of Thrones. And the differences between the innocent and guilty scripts were too subtle to properly guess who the murderer is. Maybe that's just a limitation of the random murderer and replayable setup.

We had a group of 17 searching out the murderer, the group all got into their roles and the characters were a blast!! Everyone had fun , the odd quip here and there was great. We had one person play the role of the King too, they did not want to take part in the Mystery part, but they enjoyed reading out the information between the rounds, it made the event more interactive. Everyone enjoyed themselves, the costumes were amazing and some of the actors were great in their characters!!

Absolutely fantastic! We had 21 players ranging in age from 7 years (a good reader) to 75. The game was meant for only 20 players but the King of Hydrock was on audio or script , so we had one person controlling the game and the other reading the script so that we had a role for everyone in the group. It took roughly 4 1/2 hours taking in a medieval banquet of pie and mash after round 2. Costume and characters were great as was the idea of awards.

We had a GREAT TIME! I enjoyed the amount of character selections that were available. We try and do a family and friends mystery dinner twice a year. This was our second one and it was awesome. The only downside to this game was that it relied heavily on reading the script and it took away from the overall fun of ad lib. There are so many instructions and takes away from the enjoyment of being together for dinner and having fun with the game. Overall, I totally recommend but encourage the game makers to take a look at their formula and try and condense some of the material.

Wir hatten viel Spaß beim spielen! Die Musikauswahl war perfekt und meine Freunde hatten große Freude am verkleiden. Die Geschichte war sehr komplex, die Charaktere gut ausgewählt, aber die Geschichte an der einen oder anderen Stelle auch etwas unübersichtlich. Daher war es etwas schwierig, den Mörder über die schwammige Beweislage fassen. Wir kannten die Person sehr gut, die der Mörder war, daher haben wir am Verhalten gemerkt, dass etwas nicht stimmt. Natürlich bringt es den Vorteil, dass man dadurch das Spiel erneut spielen kann. Vielleicht lockern mehr Aufgaben und differenziertere Runden das Spiel auf. Wir waren dennoch sehr zufrieden und hatten einen lustigen Abend! Danke!

Overall we enjoyed the game. My only issue is I spent a long time printing things at home, I have an old printer so wasn’t able to print double sided but didn’t realise some of the character booklets were 14 pages long!!! Lucky there was only 4 of us for the game otherwise I would need at least a whole day to print everything - I also think the downloads could be simplified; there’s a lot of stuff that’s not necessary like the cover and contents lists.

We enjoyed playing the game, but a few features could be better. The font used on the clues was awful. It was really hard to read and took so much effort; we just decided to skip some of them. Likewise, the code that had to be deciphered was very challenging because many of the letters looked the same. From a family fully adept at this type of puzzle, it was difficult. In the end we were a little disappointed because it was virtually impossible to determine who the murderer was from the clues given.

Our crew enjoyed themselves. The coded messages did not add to the story or advance the plot. One or two would have been enough. Four became a chore. They could be replaced with puzzles or more relevant clues or other print matter. Overall an enjoyable, easy-to-use game where the host can play, too.

I bought this kit for my fiancé's 30th birthday! I have done many murder mystery parties before, so I was really excited to find a kit based off of high fantasy (which he loves). Most of the content was really cool and engaging. We really liked decoding the messages, and we also really liked how the talking points were pre-written, so if you have anyone coming to the party that is shy or has never done a murder mystery before, it was a nice helpful touch! One other thing - I really liked how the murderer is decided the night of the game. That eliminates any stress if any guests cancel last minute. My only piece of feedback, though, is that the structure of the kit is kind of hard to understand. I really like being able to buy a kit, print everything, and feel ready to go because everything is really nicely written out. The directions for gameplay aren't very detailed, so it was hard navigating a new type of game. The simplistic structure does allow for a bit of flexibility in how the game can go, but it was just a bit hard. I wish there were more details in the instructions. It felt kind of awkward at times because at some points the events of the evening didn't flow well into each other, and I think that kind of ruined the guest experience a bit.
