World renown baker, author and artisan chef who has spent 40 years building a multi-million-pound baking empire, with bakeries in 40 countries. Now planning to retire, he's hosting The Great Bake Down — a televised competition whose winner will inherit his entire business.

Ed Velvet is the second-place baker in The Great Bake Down — a dark, broody "vampire baker" from a small town, known for rich, dark desserts. If anything happened to front-runner Lennon Drizzle, Ed would claim the prize, which makes him the most obvious suspect.

Male, Barry's son from a whirlwind romance abroad. He's the only surviving relative that can be traced, and he thinks the competition is unfair. As a direct blood relative, he thinks he should be the one to inherit the business. He's been writing to Barry for a few months, trying to get a meeting. When his calls and emails were ignored, he started showing up on set and protesting, security has removed him several times, but he keeps finding a way back in.

One of the Bake Down hosts, a comedian, actor and writer, known for being little and weird. They don't have a very good filter when hosting on national television and often get into trouble for saying or doing the wrong thing. The show was getting a bit dull and losing fans, and Cat was hired to bring something a little bit different to the show. They've never been a big fan of cooking or baking, and so people have questioned why they're there. They claim that if you want to make a dish less boring, you need to add a little spice, glitter, or whatever. That's what they're here to do.

Female, she's a huge Barry fan. She has all his books, has visited all his bakeries, and followed his career for years. She's quite obsessive and would really want to be Mrs Merry. She acts and dresses like a traditional 1950s housewife but tends to get quite agitated when people try and break her out of her fantasy. In reality, she has never actually spoken to her "husband to be" directly. She's written him many letters, but she never gets a response. She's imagined this whole relationship with him, and today she decided to take matters into her own hands and forced her way on to set to seek him out directly and bring him into her fantasy.

Female, a judge on Bake Down, she has very high standards and rarely gives any praise, however when she does, it's a big deal, and competitors are always eagerly seeking her approval and blessed handshake. She likes to play up to her 'hard nut to crack' reputation, but is actually quite laid back and fun. She likes to psyche the competitors out and wind them up a little bit on camera, but can actually be quite warm and supportive, especially to the younger competitors who she feels she should take under her wing and guide.

Female. She's Bake Down's show runner, and the one who found Lennon Drizzle's body. She's super busy and super organised, always running around doing something, chasing competitors or trying to get the judges ready. She hates delays. She needs everything to run on time and follow her precise schedule, or she will have a little bit of a meltdown, and you don't want to see her when she's cracking under pressure as she will have a few strong words to say.

Male, a French Pastry Chef and one of the competitors on Bake Down. He is currently in 3rd place. Should something happen to the winner (murdered perhaps?), he would take the prize. He's very flamboyant, very particular and does everything with a flourish and flare. He doesn't understand the English and their plain and boring foods. Everything he does has a kick to it; he wants to spread his French fashions and cuisine to the world and will do whatever it takes to get his work known. He's short-tempered and prone to tantrums if things don't go his way.

Male, one of the Bake Down hosts. He's a comedian and an actor mostly known for his strange looks and being weird. His fashion sense and comedy can be a bit silly and rather extreme. He's a bit much for some people, and many questioned the producer's choice to cast him as a host. He doesn't really care, though. He's made quite a bit of money being weird, and he just laughs it off. He's not going to change who he is for anyone and thinks British baking needs a little bit more spice added to it anyway.

The director of The Great Bake Down. A professional chef with very high standards, she has gained a reputation for speaking her mind and calling people out on their incompetence quite forcibly. She's foul-mouthed, must be in total control, and will put up with nothing. She's travelled the world, is known as an expert on how restaurants should be run, and has trained some of the best chefs.

Female, a competitor on the Bake Down, Yorkshire born and loud about it. From the moment she opens her mouth, you're in no doubt of where she's come from. She's proud to be a commoner and thinks baking, in particular, tends to be quite elitist, and she doesn't like that. She's not a big fan of too much faff. Baking should be for everyone, and no one should be excluded from it because they can't afford posh ingredients or to travel around the world. So she aims to keep it simple and local.

A food journalist, who has written several books and articles over the years and has their own web series. They're known for making food sound quite seductive and sensual. They use a lot of alliteration and often make everything sound like an innuendo. They're here because they are reporting on the competition, talking to the competitors about their recipes and their plans for the future and doing a little bit of "behind the scenes at Bake down!" for their web series.

An edgy, stylish and very flamboyant Italian competitor who works as a cake baker and decorator at Barry Merry's Italian bakery. Everything she creates is colourful and visually stunning, mixing bold sweet-and-savoury flavours with naturally sourced ingredients and finished off with cream or ice cream.

A female competitor on Bake Down! and a sensitive perfectionist who takes jokes too personally and doesn't cope well under pressure — but when things go right she can be amazing and has baked some of the best work.

A judge on Bake Down. They're quite posh, went to the finest schools and trained with the best. Their well off background has made it quite easy for them to get to where they are, and they don't have a lot of understanding of people who haven't had it so easy. They're difficult to impress because they enjoy traditional dishes and expect everything to be followed according to the traditional recipe. If you can combine traditional dishes but give them different flares and twists and experiment well with flavours, then they'll be quite impressed, but it's hard to do that.

Bake Down's chief makeup artist and designer, who uses all-natural ingredients in their makeup and designs their own cosmetics line based on baking favourites. A scientist who quite enjoys baking but didn't make the shortlist for contenders on the show — something they're a little bitter about — and they'll happily tell anyone, even the judges, when they're doing something wrong.

Female, a photographer for a lot of food magazines and blogs. She's a full-on hipster, very stylish, on top of all the latest trends. If something is cool, she knows about it, if something is going to be cool next week, she already knows about it, and her Instagram has over 5000 followers. She produces great photos, and no one knows quite how she does it. She will do anything to get the photo captured by the paparazzi.

Female, a competitor, she's the youngest in the competition and takes a lot of inspiration from her relatives. She's been baking with her grandmother from an early age and has a lot of respect for her. She enjoys strong flavours, and many of her creations are taken from different cultures and different countries. Her techniques and presentations lack finesse, and because of that, she's been steady throughout the competition but has yet to get a win. She feels like the judges are particularly harsh on her. The flavours are perfect, but she feels the judges care more about how something looks than how it tastes.

Male, producer on the show, a world-famous chef who owns several restaurants and is particularly fond of Italian food. He's quite famous and doesn't really have a good understanding of what's affordable. His "budget foods" are still usually beyond most people's budget, and he's a bit disillusioned from the real world. However, he likes things to be healthy, encourages the use of fruits, veg and natural ingredients in baking, and is fond of fruitcake, carrot cake, banana cake, etc.

Female, a competitor, she's a vegan, hipster, tries to make all the cakes healthy if possible, uses a lot of fruit and veg and aims to make things glutton free and vegan friendly. She uses a lot of substitutes and unusual ingredients that can make her bakes look and taste a little bit odd, so she hasn't progressed very far and feels the judges are discriminating against her for not creating "traditional" sugary cakes.
