HOW IT WORKS
This is a brand-new version of Dead Men Drink No Rum, redesigned for even more fun and flexibility. The updated format works seamlessly for both in-person and virtual events, with easy-to-follow host instructions, engaging evidence reveals, and interactive character booklets that keep every player involved.
While most of the gameplay is improvised and interactive, there are some short, scripted lines to set the scene and introduce characters - perfect for players who like a little extra guidance at the start. After that, it’s all about using your backstory, hidden objectives, and clues to share (or keep secret) as the mystery unfolds.

MURDER MYSTERY PLOT
The Bouncing Barnacle, a pirate ship, has just docked in Santa Tortuga. Its rambunctious crew meet at the village tavern alongside the colourful locals. But the party is cut short when Pop DeKegg, the tavern keeper, is found drowned with his head in a vat of rum. He’d been holding a treasure map for the pirates — was that why he was murdered? Or was it a local who wanted the riches for themselves? Or did someone mistake Pop for his lookalike cousin, the pirate Captain “Lefty” Loosey?

Pirate Murder Mystery Host Your Own Game Kit FAQs

Both. This updated version of Dead Men Drink No Rum has been redesigned to work seamlessly for in-person parties and for virtual events over video call, such as Zoom.

Because it's a digital, printable kit, you can gather everyone around the table and print the materials at home, or simply share the booklets and evidence on screen and play remotely with friends, family or colleagues anywhere in the world.

A game of Dead Men Drink No Rum typically runs for around 1.5 to 3 hours, making it an ideal centrepiece for a dinner party, family night in or team event.

The exact length depends on your group - larger crews, plenty of role-play and a leisurely meal between rounds will naturally stretch the evening, while a smaller, faster-paced group may wrap things up sooner. The flexible format lets you set the tempo that suits your party.

Dead Men Drink No Rum is a printable, host-your-own pirate murder mystery kit that you download instantly after purchase. Everything you need to run the night is included, so there's nothing to wait for in the post - simply print at home (or share digitally) and set sail.

The kit contains a Host Guide with character cards, an Evidence Pack featuring the fake treasure map and Pop's notebook, individual character booklets, game ballots, party invitations and costume suggestions to help set the scene aboard The Bouncing Barnacle.

Between them, these materials give you clued-up hosting instructions, each guest's secret backstory and objectives, and all the evidence needed to uncover who drowned tavern keeper Pop DeKegg in a vat of rum.

Yes. Dead Men Drink No Rum uses a random murderer mechanic, which means the culprit isn't fixed from one game to the next.

That makes it wonderfully re-playable - you can gather a different crew, swap characters around and enjoy a fresh mystery each time, because the outcome can change with every play-through. As a downloadable kit, you can simply reprint the materials whenever you fancy another swashbuckling evening.

This pirate-themed mystery is a great fit for all sorts of gatherings. It's designed to work equally well as a family night in, a dinner party with friends or a team-building event for colleagues.

With its swashbuckling theme and tropical tavern setting, it also makes a memorable centrepiece for birthdays, celebrations, themed parties and any occasion where you want an evening of laughter, intrigue and adventure - whether hosted in person or over video call.

Dead Men Drink No Rum is recommended for players aged 14 and over.

With a medium difficulty level, it's pitched to keep teenagers and adults engaged, making it well suited to older family game nights, groups of friends and workplace events alike.

Costumes are entirely optional, but they're warmly encouraged - dressing up really brings the high-seas atmosphere of Santa Tortuga to life.

The kit includes costume suggestions to help, with players stepping into the roles of pirates and colourful onshore characters. Think fearsome captains, swashbuckling sailors, cunning pirate queens and the tavern's local characters. Whether your guests go all-out or keep it simple, the mystery plays just as well.

Yes. Dead Men Drink No Rum scales to suit different group sizes, with character tiers designed for a smaller crew of pirates and colourful locals right up to a larger gathering.

If you'd like to welcome extra guests aboard, expansion packs let you add more players and characters so nobody has to sit out. Choose the player count that matches your party and everyone can take on a role.

Yes, one person acts as the host to run the evening, and the kit includes an easy-to-follow Host Guide to make it straightforward - even if you've never hosted a murder mystery before.

The good news is the host can play along too, taking on a character while guiding the group through the story. Thanks to the random murderer mechanic, the host doesn't know who did it in advance, so they can enjoy the mystery and be a full part of the fun rather than just refereeing.
